And in mere moments Joseph McKinney was going to be caught up in the water….but at this particular moment he was trying to escape with his young child.   He had run into the cattle fence at the end of town and his clothing was tangled in it.. he was desperate to escape but the water came roaring down the valley… 275 million gallons of cold, dark water.   In his last seconds of life Joseph threw his child over the fence to safety and seconds later the cold brutal water came and took him away.

78 people died from that fateful event on Sept 30, 1911 in Austin PA.   The Dam stands to this day a silent, chilling reminder that while we are to “Conquer the Earth”  we have not yet made it to that point.
